Recently, the Swecha Learning Centre (SLC) held an induction program to welcome and introduce new students to the center’s mission, activities, and the broader vision of using technology for social good. As volunteers and members, we had the privilege of sharing SLC’s dedication to fostering a community that champions Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) technologies and their potential to empower society.
During the induction, we provided an overview of the exciting opportunities at SLC, including our annual Freedom Fest, which celebrates the spirit of digital freedom and community-driven technology. We also discussed the various summer camps and bootcamps that SLC organizes, focusing on FOSS technologies, where students can gain hands-on experience and deepen their understanding of these vital tools.
We took the time to explain what FOSS technologies are and why they are essential for creating a fair and transparent digital world. The story of Aaron Swartz, an internet activist and advocate for free access to information, was shared to inspire students about the impact one can have in promoting digital freedom.
In addition, we introduced the concept of Freedombox, a personal server that empowers users to regain control of their digital lives, and highlighted the Swecha AP Community Digital Library, a resource that provides free access to a vast array of educational materials.
The induction program was a great success, sparking enthusiasm among the new students to join SLC and contribute to its mission. As volunteers, we are thrilled about the journey ahead and look forward to making a lasting impact through our work at SLC, empowering the next generation to leverage technology for social good.
