Objective

The objective of the session was to critically reflect on the relevance of Savitribai Phule’s contributions in the present generation and to broaden the understanding of her work beyond a narrow focus on girl child rights.

Description

On the occasion of Savitribai Phule Jayanti, volunteers gathered for a discussion-based session rather than a formal celebration. The group explored a hypothesis on whether Savitribai Phule’s struggle would still be necessary if she were born in today’s generation, examining claims of achieved equality and equity for girls. Through discussion, participants concluded that her work addressed broader issues such as access to education, social reform, and systemic inequality, which remain relevant even today.

The session concluded with a commune-style potluck lunch, encouraging community bonding, shared responsibility, and informal interaction among volunteers.

Outcome

Participants developed a broader and more critical understanding of Savitribai Phule’s contributions beyond gender-specific narratives. The discussion reinforced the idea that social reform is an ongoing process, not a completed milestone. Volunteers practiced critical thinking by questioning assumptions about equality in the present generation. The commune lunch strengthened community bonding, inclusivity, and shared responsibility within the group.
