HIS STORY
Chinna Rao is a 45-year-old resident of Vizianagaram, a quaint town nestled in the heart of
Andhra Pradesh, India. With just a primary education up to Class 7, he never ventured beyond
his beloved hometown. Instead, he embraced his family’s pottery tradition, learning the craft
from his father and grandfather.
Chinna Rao’s life revolves around his small pottery workshop, a cozy space filled with spinning
wheels and shelves of clay. Every morning, he heads to the nearby clay pits to gather the raw
material for his art. The warmth of the rising sun and the coolness of the clay beneath his
fingers make for a perfect start to his day
With years of dedication and practice, Chinna Rao has become a master potter. His nimble
hands shape the clay into exquisite pots, vases, and idols. He knows that the true magic
happens when the clay takes form under his touch, and his creations are a testament to his
passion.
Chinna Rao’s peak sales occur during the festive seasons of Vinayaka Chavithi, Dussehra, and
Deepavali. These are the times when the people of Vizianagaram, and neighboring towns,
eagerly seek his pottery to adorn their homes and perform rituals.
During these special times, Chinna Rao’s workshop becomes a hive of activity. He works
tirelessly, often late into the night, to meet the growing demand for his pottery. Neighbors drop
by to admire his work and place orders for their celebrations.
Chinna Rao isn’t just a potter; he’s a beloved figure in the community. His pottery has become a
part of the town’s identity. People often visit his workshop not just to buy his creations but also share stories, laughter and a cup of chai.
Chinna Rao hopes to pass on his pottery legacy to his children and grandchildren, ensuring that
the art of clay lives on for generations. He dreams of expanding his small workshop into a
thriving business, showcasing the beauty of Vizianagaram’s pottery to the world.
